Mini Laptop Maintenance Checklist

Hard Drive Backup SoftwareI’ll admit, I’m a MAC guy, and they don’t require as much preventative maintenance as PCs, but I do have lots of experience with PCs as well, and still use one in addition to my Macbook Pro 15″ when Windows only software is required. There are several maintenance tasks that need to be taken care of on a regular basis when using a mini laptop computer with a Windows operating system.

Backups – It’s critical to backup your hard drive regularly. The easiest way to perform a backup is using a synchronization software like SyncToy to clone your data to an external storage device.

Antivirus Software – When it comes to Windows based laptop computers, antivirus software like McAfee or Norton Antivirus are an absolute MUST. Do a weekly scan of your entire hard drive, including malware detection and removal.

Keep Programs Updated – Be sure to keep all your programs updated regularly. Most programs sold my reputable manufacturers and vendors offer an “auto-update” feature that can be enabled. Windows itself uses an auto updater for staying up to date, including any patches and service packs.

Defrag Hard Drive – Keep your hard disk clean by using a disk defragmenter every couple weeks. This will reorganize data clusters on the disk and improve access speeds for applications and the operating system.
